Château Grand-Puy Ducasse: A Pauillac Renaissance
Château Grand-Puy Ducasse, a Fifth Growth in the prestigious 1855 Classification, is unique in Pauillac, being the only classified estate with its winery situated directly on the quays in the heart of the village. The estate has undergone a significant 'Renaissance,' resulting in wines that beautifully capture the power and elegance of the appellation's gravelly terroir.
Tasting Notes (The Pauillac Signature)
- Colour: Deep, vibrant garnet.
- Nose: A classic claret profile, showcasing concentrated blackcurrant and plum fruit, layered with elegant notes of cedar, pencil lead, and a touch of mocha from barrel ageing.
- Palate: Powerful and structured, yet refined. The palate is driven by firm, yet silky, tannins that provide the backbone for its long-term ageing potential. The finish is persistent, dry, and distinctly Pauillac.
Serving Suggestions
This wine is built for the cellar, but a young vintage requires a good two-hour decant to soften its edges. Serve slightly below room temperature at 16-18°C (61-64°F).
- Food Pairings: Traditional Sunday Roast Lamb with a rich jus, Beef Wellington, Venison or Game Pie, Mature Stilton or other hard, aged cheese.
